One of Chennai's oldest settlements, now merged into Tambaram City Municipal Corporation, sitting right beside the airport on the GST Road.
Pallavaram traces its name to the Pallava dynasty, and archaeological finds place habitation here as far back as the Palaeolithic age; by the 8th century it was a settlement under Mahendravarman I. Both the Mughal era and, later, the British East India Company kept a cantonment here alongside the older one at St. Thomas Mount, and the Madras aerodrome, the ancestor of today's Chennai International Airport, opened in Pallavaram in 1929.
The suburb became its own municipality in 1970 and was later merged into Tambaram City Municipal Corporation in November 2021. It sits directly on the Grand Southern Trunk Road (GST Road), the historic route south out of the city, and shares a boundary with Chromepet, where Casagrand also has a project (Madelyn) though not one covered on this page.
The airport is the area's defining feature: it is close enough to be genuinely convenient, though buyers should ask about flight-path noise for any specific site. Pallavaram Lake, once 189 acres, has shrunk through dumping and encroachment over the years, which is worth knowing about rather than a reason on its own to avoid the area.
The airport and the GST Road dominate; rail is a short local option.
| Mode | What serves the area | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Road | GST Road (NH 45 / NH 32) | The historic trunk road running south towards Chengalpattu and beyond; it also connects north towards the airport and the city. |
| Rail | Pallavaram railway station | On the Chennai Beach–Chengalpattu suburban line, giving a direct rail option into the city without relying on road traffic. |
| Air | Chennai International Airport | A few kilometres away by road; ask about flight-path noise for any specific site rather than assuming it is a non-issue. |
| Metro (planned) | Airport–Kilambakkam elevated corridor | A proposed Chennai Metro Phase II corridor would run from the airport towards Kilambakkam; treat this as a future plan rather than a confirmed timeline. |
The airport–Kilambakkam metro corridor is still at the planning and approval stage, with reports of the timeline moving. Do not price it into a purchase decision today.
A mature, established suburb with the city's two big employment draws, the airport and MEPZ, close by.
The corporation merger is done; the metro corridor is still a plan.
| Project | Status | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Merger into Tambaram City Municipal Corporation | Completed, November 2021 | Pallavaram is now administered as part of Tambaram Corporation rather than as its own municipality. |
| Airport–Kilambakkam metro corridor | Proposed / early approval stage | Reported to have received central government movement on approval, but no construction timeline is confirmed. Check Chennai Metro Rail Limited's own updates. |
| Pallavaram Lake rehabilitation | Ongoing, in phases | Biomining and waste-transfer proposals have been reported for the lake area; ask locally about the current state near any specific site. |
Opening dates for public projects are targets and have moved before. Treat them as indications and check the agency's current announcement. Status as reported up to 21 September 2026.
A fair look at what draws buyers here and what to weigh against it.
Four checks that matter most for this stretch.
Distance from the runway varies by exactly where a block sits on the campus. Ask to visit during the day to judge noise for yourself.
The lake has faced dumping and encroachment. Ask about the site's elevation and stormwater drainage rather than assuming it is unaffected.
The airport–Kilambakkam corridor is still at an early stage. Do not let a marketing timeline shape your decision.

Pallavaram is immediately next to Chennai International Airport on the GST Road, typically a five to ten minute drive depending on the exact site and traffic.
An airport-to-Kilambakkam elevated corridor has been proposed as part of Chennai Metro Phase II, but it is still at an early approval stage with no confirmed construction timeline.
No. Pallavaram Municipality was merged into Tambaram City Municipal Corporation in November 2021, so it is administered separately from Greater Chennai Corporation.

The lake has shrunk from about 189 acres through dumping and encroachment. It is a reason to ask about drainage for a specific site, not a reason to avoid the area outright.
