Kolathur and Madhavaram: What to Know Before You Look
A north-west Chennai neighbourhood where the Chennai Metro Red Line is being built, with a new government hospital and several schools close to the project.
Kolathur and Madhavaram lie in the north-west of the city, with Perambur to the south-east, Villivakkam and Korattur to the south-west and the Puzhal and Ambattur belt to the west. Retteri junction, where Jawaharlal Nehru Salai meets the Perambur to Red Hills road, links the area to Anna Nagar, Red Hills, Madhavaram and Perambur. Two flyovers there, of 740 m and 1,320 m, carry through traffic.
Madhavaram has the Aavin Milk Colony, a botanical garden and a large mofussil bus terminus with services to Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. Kolathur is known for its ornamental fish trade. For house hunters the area has two things going for it: it is on the route of Chennai Metro Phase 2 Corridor 5, and the state opened the six-storey Periyar Government Hospital in Kolathur in February 2025.

Reports from November 2021 and October 2024 name Kolathur among the localities where water stagnated after heavy northeast monsoon rain, including Periyar Nagar and Jawahar Nagar, and cite silted stormwater drains and pumps. The Greater Chennai Corporation says most of its stormwater drain works are complete, while residents in several areas still report gaps. Ask the sales team about the site's ground level and stormwater arrangements, and talk to people who live nearby about the last monsoons.
Drive the commute at your own hour
Distance matters less than time. Drive from the site to your workplace, your children's school and the nearest station on a weekday morning and evening.

Treat any opening date as a target. Check the current position with Chennai Metro Rail Limited before you count on a station near the project.
